Did you know Male and Female Mandarin Ducks look different from each other?

Male Mandarin Duck is a beautifully colored with a greenish-black forehead and a purple crest near the back of the head. The sides of the head are creamy white with a chestnut patch below eyes. The sides of the neck and cheeks have longer brown feathers and upper breast is maroon. However, females are grayer and have a smaller crest and eye ring compared to the male. They have lifespan around 6 to 7 years.

Female Mandarin Duck take the initiative in choosing a mate by orienting enticing behavior toward a preferred male. The courtship display of this species is very impressive including mock-drinking and shaking. Female will lay 9 to 12 white oval eggs and have incubation period of 28 to 30  days. Mature ducks become mature at one year of age. Mandarin Ducks are monogamous and pair bonds may continue for many seasons.

Mandarin Ducks can help your Feng Shui. Many modern Feng Shui practitioners claim that because of their association with love and monogamy, having a pair of Mandarin Duck figurines can attract and enhance love. Apart from that, Mandarin Duck its not very tasty. This is because they are dirty feeders, often eating snails, small mice, fish spawn and consequently are will known to have an unpleasant taste.
